Surf spot guide Β· Nouvelle Aquitaine, France
Mellow Les Landes beach break with consistent a-frame peaks across all tides, best read from the lighthouse above.
Contis-Plage is a generous stretch of Les Landes beachbreak sitting at the mouth of a small river on the CΓ΄te d'Argent, roughly 60km south of Arcachon. The waves are well-covered sand-bottom peaks that break with a slopey, medium-paced character β steep enough to generate clean a-frame lefts and rights without the raw power of the more exposed breaks further north. Flatspots and welling sections keep things forgiving rather than punishing, which suits the wide ability range that visits here. The break works on any swell from W through NW to N, and an easterly wind keeps faces clean. Tides have little bearing on whether the spot fires, making it reliably surfable throughout the day. The rivermouth at the south end of the beach helps sculpt the best sandbars, and the sandbars immediately north of the old bunker are consistently productive. The lighthouse standing above the resort gives a useful elevated view of which peaks are forming best before paddling out β a practical habit worth adopting when multiple sandbars are active. Crowds build through July and August as summer surf schools fill the water, but outside peak season the lineup thins considerably. The river estuary occasionally pushes turbid water south along the beach after heavy inland rain, a minor but real consideration for those sensitive to water quality.

The lineup is quiet for most of the year with only a handful of surfers on any given day. July through September brings a noticeable surge as summer holidaymakers and surf school students fill the water, particularly on weekends.

+9 MORE βClimb to the lighthouse before your session to read the active sandbars from above β it saves time in the water
The sandbanks north of the bunker and near the rivermouth are typically the most defined, especially on mid-range swells
Avoid the area directly in front of the river outflow after prolonged inland rain as water quality drops noticeably
Crowds thin quickly after late August β September offers the same swell consistency with far fewer surfers
The break works on all tides, but incoming tide sessions often produce the cleanest, steepest walls.
