Mimizan-Plage is a high-volume beach break on the Landes coast of southwest France, built around the Courant de Mimizan rivermouth. The estuary's outflow sculpts sandbars across four distinct beach sections, producing fast, hollow a-frame peaks that can fire in the 0.3-2.4m range. The waves are particularly well-formed from mid to high tide, when the bars fill in and the peaks gain shape and steepness. Despite a slopey feel on smaller days, the wave has real punch - it produces steep, quick sections that reward committed surfing. The consistency rating here is among the highest on this stretch of coast, driven by direct exposure to Atlantic groundswells from the W-NW window. The break gained quiet recognition through local bodyboarder Nicolas Capdeville, who earned a world championship title out of this modest resort. Access is straightforward - four separate beach sections spread the crowds, and the parking area is free. The rivermouth area concentrates the best sandbars but also channels the Courant de Mimizan current, which demands awareness. A secondary note: paper factories nearby can generate unpleasant smells when offshores are blowing, and the estuary brings water quality concerns. Conditions are changeable - the sandbanks shift regularly, so what worked yesterday may not fire today.
