NW-facing North Cornwall beachbreak firing steep, fast peaks when big Atlantic swell wraps into the bay.
Trevone is a northwest-facing sand beachbreak tucked into a small bay on North Cornwall's Atlantic coast. The bay's sheltered aspect means it needs a substantial swell - primarily from the W to WNW, with SW swells also wrapping in - to produce surfable waves. When conditions align, sandbars at either end of the bay throw up steep, fast peaks that can get genuinely hollow, particularly when there is a strong westerly component pushing into the bay. The wave shape is variable: a left can form off the rock edges at lower tide while the right side of the bay also produces workable walls. Waves close out in the largest swells or when the sand is poorly shaped. Quality is infrequent enough that the break sits at around a 1-2m working range for most visits, but it can hold larger surf on a good day. Trevone is not a secret - it is a named bay with village parking, seasonal lifeguards and surf facilities - but the rarity of real quality keeps it from being swamped outside peak summer. When it does fire, locals show up fast and the lineups at the better-shaped sandbars become competitive. Rips are the primary hazard, particularly on the north side of the bay and on an outgoing tide. The bay is accessible directly from village car parks via steps or a sloping path to the beach.
