Porth.

Porth is a sheltered sandy beach break sitting in a small bay just north of Newquay, producing low-energy, forgiving peaks over a flat sand shelf. The wave's profile is its defining trait: backing-off, fat and sloppy rather than punchy or hollow, with rides rarely extending beyond 50 metres. Low tide exposes the beach to more swell and delivers the most defined shape; as the tide rises and fills, the wave softens further and slows down, making those filling conditions the most suitable for complete beginners. A west-northwest swell wrapping into the bay and a southeast offshore wind produce the best result, though the sheltered aspect means the waves arriving here have already lost much of their punch compared to more exposed Newquay breaks. The spot rarely draws a crowd and carries no reputation for localism. Its main practical hazard has nothing to do with the wave itself: a river drains into the southern end of the beach and creates a rip that has been responsible for multiple rescue incidents, including an 11-person operation in September 2026. Surfers who want to use the rock-entry line on the left side at mid to high tide should observe the break before committing, as the scramble involves jumping in behind the breakers onto an otherwise easy paddle. For intermediate surfers, Porth offers little challenge but can serve as a low-consequence warm-up when nearby spots are maxed out.
