Tolcarne Wedge sits at the eastern end of Tolcarne Beach where incoming swell refracts off the cliff and breakwater to collide with the open-ocean energy, producing a steep, bowly left that throws hard and fast over a sandy bottom. The signature feature is a half-pipe-like aerial section that fires on a rising tide above roughly 5.5m, though on bigger spring tides of 7m-plus the wave needs more swell to generate the same wedging effect. SW to NW swell reaches it well, with a W angle considered optimal, and SE winds hold it clean. It can be excellent, but only when conditions align: this is a short wave (50m or less), punchy and fast, not a cruising wave. The Wedge has become Britain's premier bodyboarding venue precisely because of its steep launch ramp and air sections, drawing the country's best riders whenever it switches on. Access is on foot from Newquay town via Narrowcliff steps or the sloping road from Barrowfields - parking is limited streetside nearby. Strong rips beside the north-east rocks, a heavy shorebreak on the high push, and submerged rocks demand experience and awareness. When it's on, the lineup is one of the most competitive in Cornwall.
