Surf spot guide Β· Newquay, United Kingdom
Punchy high-tide left wedge on Newquay's Tolcarne Beach, famous bodyboard arena when the swell lines up.
Tolcarne Wedge is a short, punchy left that jacks up against the cliff at the east end of Tolcarne Beach in Newquay. A bowling, wedging peak forms on a pushing high tide as swell refracts off the headland and doubles up on the sand, producing fast, thick takeoffs over a shifting sand bottom. The wave rarely runs longer than fifty metres but packs a lot into that distance, rewarding late drops and quick turns. It is one of Britain's most recognisable bodyboard waves and draws the country's best riders whenever a clean SW to NW groundswell pairs with a SE wind. Access is straightforward: roadside parking in the streets above Tolcarne and a short walk to the sand, with showers, a surf school and a surf shop on the beach. The lineup gets ridiculously busy the moment it switches on, bodyboarders hold priority on the inside bowl, and surfers looking for more space can slide west along the beach toward Great Western or Towan.
