Watergate Bay runs for roughly 2.5km of open, cliff-backed sand on Cornwall's north coast, throwing up a string of shifting A-frame peaks that rearrange with each tide. On small days the waves are forgiving and slopey, welling up off flat sandbars and backing off on the shoulder, which is why learners and surf schools treat it as a home break. When a solid SW to NW swell lands and the tide pushes in, the same peaks stand up steeper, the barrel sections square off, and the rips start running hard along the beach. The spot sits just north of Newquay and is one of Britain's best-known beach breaks, hosting the Extreme Academy and regular contests, demos and kitesurf sessions on westerly winds. Access is straightforward from the car park above the beach, with a short walk down to the sand. Crowds are a constant in peak season, but the sheer length of the bay lets surfers spread out and hunt their own peak away from the main pack.
