Watergate Bay.

Watergate Bay is a two-and-a-half kilometre arc of sand sitting on an exposed stretch of North Cornwall coastline, roughly five kilometres north of Newquay. The break consists of shifting sandbanks that produce peaks the full length of the beach, offering both lefts and rights depending on where the bars are sitting. At smaller size the waves are forgiving and well-suited to progression, with slopey walls and relatively covered takeoffs. As the swell fills in, the break steepens noticeably and the faster sections can catch out surfers who treated it as a gentle learner wave. The beach works across all tides, though low to mid typically gives the most defined banks, while high tide compresses the available sand against the cliffs and shortens rides. SW to W swells are the engine here, with E and SE winds delivering clean offshore conditions. September through November and the winter months deliver the most consistent and powerful surf. The beach is also known as Watergate Beach and historically as Tregurrian Bay. Access is direct from two car parks above the beach, the larger Cornwall Council car park holding around 400 spaces, with a steep path down to the sand. The central access point draws the most people; walking north or south along the beach finds noticeably quieter peaks. Summer weekends bring significant numbers of surfers, swimmers, and kitesurfers on westerly winds. The local vibe is relaxed and welcoming.
