Fast, hollow Newquay beachbreak that fires in big SW storms when every other option closes out.
Towan sits at the north end of a long beachbreak stretch running down to Great Western inside Newquay's main bay. The wave breaks over pure sand with fast, hollow peaks that tend to close out unless the bank is dialled in on the day. Its real value shows up in big SW storms, when the Towan to Great Western strip can be the only rideable option for miles around as swell wraps into the protected corner of the bay. A proposed artificial reef has been discussed for the inside over the years. On the inside, the Harbour left can turn on when conditions line up. Entry is straightforward from the small car park at the south end, with seasonal lifeguard cover, surf school and surf shop access making it one of the easier Newquay options to reach. The reality is summer chaos: the spot gets horribly busy when it is small, packed with holidaymakers and surf schools fighting for short rides. When Towan closes out or the crowd is too thick, Tolcarne, Great Western and the Fistral beaches are all within walking distance.
