Towan.

Towan sits in the shelter of Towan Head beside Newquay Harbour, giving it a function that no other town beach can replicate: when SW storms or large W swells make Fistral and the open beaches unsurfable, Towan can still be rideable. The sandy bottom produces fast, short-lived peaks that can hollow out quickly, though they close out as size builds. Three distinct sections reward local knowledge - Kiddies Corner is a low-tide left breaking off rocks near the north quay and is best left to experienced surfers; Bothwicks works around the rocks fronting the Island at mid tide; and the Harbour Left peels along the south quay wall at mid tide when swell is sufficient to wrap in. Waves typically run in the waist-to-shoulder range, with bigger swells tending to shut down across the beach rather than open up. The break works across all tides but sections behave differently at each stage, and the usable sand area shrinks noticeably as the tide pushes toward the Island. The main beach runs beginner and intermediate surf school sessions when conditions allow, making it one of Newquay's go-to learner venues. Summer crowds are heavy with novices and learners, and the break draws experienced surfers whenever Fistral is maxed out. A small car park sits at the south end of the beach.
