Cribber is a deep-water reef off Towan Head, just north of Little Fistral, that surfaces only when a large, clean Atlantic swell lines up correctly and the wind goes offshore. The reef focuses swell abruptly, producing thick, fast peaks with both left and right options - the left offering a longer, more committed ride, the right tending to flatten after the initial drop. Wave faces regularly exceed 4m and have topped 7m on exceptional swells, demanding precision from the first stroke. Because the break sits clear of the rocks only when the swell exceeds a critical threshold and arrives without any chop, genuinely surfable days are rare - some winters produce several sessions, others none at all. The spot's profile rose sharply after Chris Bertish rode it at significant size in 2004, drawing attention to a wave that had previously been surfed by only a handful of locals. Access is a challenge in itself: the paddle from Little Fistral car park is long and crosses savage rip channels, while the Gazzle approach from the north side of Towan Head avoids some current but adds distance. Sessions have been both paddle and tow-assisted. When it does fire, a tight crew of experienced big-wave surfers typically occupy the lineup, with spectators gathering on the headland above.

Park at the Little Fistral car park. Paddle-out routes run from Little Fistral beach or from the north side of Towan Head (the Gazzle). Both involve crossing strong rip currents and are only viable for experienced swimmers and surfers.
