Ribeira d'Ilhas is a multi-section right-hand reef that ranks as the centerpiece of Ericeira's World Surfing Reserve, the second reserve of its kind recognised globally. The wave peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand, producing rides that can stretch 200-500m when conditions align. Its strength is versatility: it handles most swell sizes when the angle is NW, tolerates light cross-winds, and runs through all stages of the tide, with the incoming phase drawing the most consistent shape. A slopey, steep wall gives intermediates room to work turns across the face, while bigger swells tighten the sections and demand commitment. The northern outside section, locally called Pontinha, is the less-ridden, more consequential part of the reef and effectively serves as a separate challenge when the swell is up. Easy parking and a cafe at the top of the cliff path make access straightforward. Ribeira d'Ilhas has hosted numerous major competitions and the lineup reflects its status: crowds are near-constant, localism is real, and the hierarchy in the water is established. Nearby estuary influence means water quality drops after heavy rainfall. The broader Ericeira reef complex offers multiple alternatives within walking distance for those willing to explore.
