Cave is a right-hand reef break that sits inside the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, breaking over an uneven, almost impossibly shallow reef shelf. When N-NW swells arrive out of deep water and trip over this ledge, the wave pitches into near-square barrels - thick, fast, and almost always closing out over exposed reef. The takeoff is routinely an air-drop, the lip accelerates at freight-train speed, and the shoulder has a habit of clamping shut with no room to exit cleanly. Boils erupt constantly through the barrel from the reef below, making tube-riding an exercise in reaction rather than positioning. Wave faces in the 1.2-3.6m range, with occasional bigger swells pushing it beyond that. High tide is the only viable window; lower water turns the reef into an unnavigable slab. Paddle out demands precise timing and line choice to avoid the exposed sections. Localism is present - Cave commands respect from both the lineup and the land. Stormrider data describes it as the riskiest wave in the country, and even professional surfers approach it cautiously. Helmets and thick rubber are not optional here. The immediate cluster of breaks - Coxos, Crazy Left, Ribeira d'Ilhas - offers alternatives when Cave is too big or conditions marginal.
