Surf spot guide Β· Ericeira, Portugal
A shallow, hollow left reef opposite Coxos that fires on SW swells at high tide - one of Ericeira's most intense waves.
Crazy Left breaks off a shallow, uneven reef sitting directly across from Coxos, producing one of the hollowest lefts in the Ericeira reserve. The wave pitches hard off the reef - thick, steep and square-lipped - and runs at freight-train pace through a very short distance before closing out or throwing again. The power profile is bowly rather than progressive, meaning the takeoff demands immediate commitment and the barrel offers almost no margin for error. Bottom is exposed uneven reef throughout, with virtually no depth buffer on the shallower sections. The wave fires exclusively on solid SW swell at high tide; it simply does not work otherwise, making it one of the more fickle spots on this coastline. When conditions do align, the lineup packs out fast - bodyboarders make up much of the crowd and are generally first to read the tricky peak. Localism here is pronounced, and visitors are expected to understand and respect the pecking order before paddling out. Entry is via rocky shoreline; timing the sets and watching the channel carefully before committing is essential. The break sits within the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, which adds prestige but does nothing to soften the reef.

The lineup is almost always packed when it is on. Because the wave is so tide and swell specific, everyone arrives at the same narrow window, making crowds intense relative to the spot's infrequent working conditions.
