Coxos.

Coxos is a right-hand point-reef that peels along a series of irregular rock shelves into a compact bay north of Ericeira. Swells arriving from deep water hit the reef with undiminished force, producing a steep, bowly takeoff that immediately locks into a hollow, fast-moving tube. The wave is classified as a freight-train: thick, driving, and unforgiving of hesitation. At its best - low to mid tide, a clean NW swell and light easterly winds - rides can stretch 200-500m down the point, linking multiple sections with sustained barrel time. Different swell angles focus energy on different parts of the reef, making the wave shift in character without losing power. Coxos sits within the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, one of only a handful of such designations globally, recognising the stretch of coast it anchors. The environment has changed little since surfers first explored it in the 1970s. Entry and exit are the first challenge: the rocky shelves are urchin-covered and the rips run hard. Getting caught inside is harrowing at any size. A strong, committed local crew holds long-standing claim to this wave; newcomers should observe before paddling out and conduct themselves with clear respect.
