Te Akau.

Te Akau is an isolated beachbreak accessed via a gravel road on the wild Waikato coast north of Raglan. The spot produces powerful A-frame peaks over sand at higher tides, with scattered rocks adding structure to the bottom and consequence to wipeouts. The wave works best on smaller SW to NW swells in the 1 to 1.8m range, when the beach can organise peaks rather than close out. Easterly winds provide clean offshore conditions, and high tide on an incoming push is the only tidal window worth targeting - lower water exposes the rocks and the shorebreak becomes unruly. The setting is genuinely lonely and undeveloped, with strong currents running along the beach and both sharks and submerged rocks as active hazards. Crowds are rare, making Te Akau a genuine solo-surfing experience on most days. The spot serves as a small-swell alternative to Raglan for intermediate surfers who want empty peaks and don't mind the drive and the gravel road access.
