Port Waikato Left breaks at the southern terminus of Sunset Beach, where the current-scoured shoreline meets headland cliffs and a left-hand point fires over a mix of rocky fingers and sand. The wave is powerful and consequential: throaty walls transition into hollow sections where the sand joins the reef, producing rides of 200 to 500 metres that demand expert-level commitment. The takeoff requires a sketchy rock entry off the headland, and the wave itself is fast and dynamic - nothing about this break forgives mistakes. SW swell is optimal from a wide SW to N window, and easterly winds groom the face. The spot works across all tides with outgoing conditions tending to sharpen the shape. Wave size ranges from 2 to 3m, with the break handling overhead surf with authority. When the left point isn't working, the beachbreak along Sunset Beach offers transient peaks before the onshore wind fills in late morning. The local crew is established and not welcoming to unfamiliar faces - approach with respect and demonstrate competence before claiming waves. Rip currents are active, sharks are present, and submerged rocks line the entry and the point itself.
