Piha is New Zealand's most iconic surf beach, sitting 40km west of Auckland on the rugged Waitakere coast. The beach is defined by its dramatic black iron sand and the imposing Lion Rock that splits the break into two distinct sections. South Piha is the main draw, offering quality lefts off the corner sandbar at low tide that peel and reform as walls before closing out in the shorebreak at high. The rip here is fast and powerful, and experienced surfers use the keyhole channel around the rocks to get out back. Additional currents run along both flanks of Lion Rock, making lineup awareness essential. North Piha comes alive at higher tides when small swells sculpt workable peaks shaped by stream outflows, though dangerous currents remain a constant factor. The break handles a wide size range - from 0.3m beachie fun to 3m-plus expert-only slabs - but when it gets big, the wave transforms into a serious, powerful beach break that demands respect and experience. The beach is backed by the protected Waitakere Ranges parkland, giving it a remote feel despite its proximity to the city. Crowd levels are high year-round; arrive early or on weekdays to score less competition. Note that the black iron sand heats intensely under direct sun.
