O'Neills Avenue.

O'Neills Avenue is a shallow reef break on Auckland's North Shore, sitting just north of the Takapuna boat ramp and adjacent to the better-known Takapuna Reef. The wave is a left-hander that breaks over a rock ledge, producing quick, steep drops and cover-up sections when enough NE swell pushes into the coastline. The break is strictly a low-tide affair - the reef only stands up with minimal water over it, and as the tide rises the wave loses all definition. Outgoing tide into low is the target window. NE swell is optimal from the wider N to E window, and NW winds provide the offshore. Wave size ranges from 2 to 1.8m with short rides under 50 metres. When O'Neills breaks, everyone on the North Shore knows about it and the lineup fills immediately. The regular crew is experienced and territorial - localism is real, and visiting surfers will need to demonstrate ability and patience to get a look in. Rip currents run along the reef edge and submerged rock ledge sections add consequence to every wipeout. Despite the short rides and narrow tidal window, the quality of the barrel sections when it fires earns it a loyal following among Auckland's best surfers.
