Milford Reef.

Milford Reef sits at the southern end of Milford Beach where tufts of uneven reef pin the sand in place, creating a rare pocket of defined peaks on a stretch of coast that otherwise closes out wall to wall. When a proper NE swell pushes in - which doesn't happen as often as you'd like - the reef corrals the energy into left and right-handers that stay open long enough to work with. The wave gets hollow and fast when conditions align, with a sucky takeoff section that punishes hesitation. Mid to high tide on the incoming is the sweet spot; too low and the reef becomes an unwelcome acquaintance. Westerly winds groom the faces nicely, though Auckland's prevailing onshores mean you'll want to check early before the sea breeze fills in. The crowd factor is real - locals know this is the only quality option in the immediate area, so when it fires it draws numbers fast. Consistency is the main limitation: NE swells are infrequent in this corner of the Hauraki Gulf, and even when they arrive the window is narrow. Rips and submerged reef sections demand respect, especially for the beginner surfers who also frequent the spot on smaller days.
