Muriwai Beach.

Muriwai Beach is one of Auckland's go-to west coast beachbreaks, a long stretch of black iron sand where shifty peaks rely on constantly moving sandbars and strong rips for shape. The break works across all tides and catches virtually every SW to NW swell that tracks across the Tasman, making it the most consistent beachbreak in the greater Auckland area. A left point at the southern end peels in front of rocks but is prone to backwash, and many surfers prefer to walk around the corner to Maori Bay where better-defined peaks break along a cliffy bay - though crowds there are heavier. Alternatively, head north toward Rimmer Road via 4WD on the beach when it's tiny to maximise size. Easterly winds are offshore and essential for quality conditions. Size ranges from 2 to 2.4m with the beach handling moderate surf well. The environment is raw and windswept - blown out and rippy much of the time. Gannet and seal colonies along the southern cliffs attract predators, and shark sightings are not uncommon. Good parking, facilities, and a large motor park behind the dunes make access straightforward.
