Ngarunui Beach, also known as Wainui Beach after the reserve behind it, is Raglan's most accessible surf spot and the default check for anyone in town. Tucked into the corner of Raglan Bay, the beach picks up virtually every swell that tracks across the Tasman, making it the most reliable wave in the area. The setup produces A-frame peaks that cater to all abilities - beginners will find manageable walls on the inside, while more experienced surfers can use the rip in the southern corner as an armchair ride to the outside, where rolling walls stretch in both directions. Mid to high tide on an incoming push is when the beach works best, with easterly winds keeping the face clean. The southern peaks near the corner are the most defined; further north toward the harbour the shape deteriorates in SW winds. Surf schools operate here daily, adding to an already busy lineup. The atmosphere can tighten when the point breaks are flat and the local crew migrates to the beach. Wave size ranges from 2 to 2.4m, with the beach handling overhead surf comfortably. Rip currents are active, especially in the southern corner, and sharks are present in the wider Raglan area. This is the easiest check-and-surf option in Raglan and the spot most visiting surfers will encounter first.
