Albatross Point.

Albatross Point is one of New Zealand's most inaccessible and heavily guarded surf spots, tucked away behind private farmland on the remote Waikato coast south of Kawhia Harbour. The wave requires a massive swell to refract around into Arohaki Bay and hit the multiple left-hand point breaks that line the coastline - conditions that materialise only a handful of times per year. When it does fire, the reward is an excellent left peeling over uneven reef for 200 to 500 metres, working across the tidal range but preferring incoming tide with southerly wind grooming the face. Access is the primary barrier: reaching the spot requires either negotiating permission from the farmer who controls the land access or taking a boat from Kawhia Harbour, and in both cases local knowledge is essential. The vibes around Albatross Point are notoriously hostile - localism here has historically extended well beyond verbal aggression. This is emphatically not a spot for visiting surfers without an established connection to the area. The wave itself handles 2 to 1.8m and suits confident intermediates when it's at manageable size, though the combination of heavy reef, rip currents, sharks, and submerged obstacles adds genuine consequence to every session. Nearby, Aotea Reef offers a big-wave tow-in option outside Aotea Harbour, and Ocean Beach at Kawhia provides a more accessible black sand beachbreak alternative.
