Ruapuke.

Ruapuke is an exposed black sand beachbreak stretching 8km south of Raglan on the Waikato coast, serving as a powerful swell magnet that picks up more size than most beaches in the region. The spot works best as a summer alternative to Raglan's crowded point breaks, offering A-frame peaks that suit intermediate surfers when conditions cooperate. The north end of the beach cleans up nicely in a NE wind and smaller swell, while the Toreparu Stream at the southern end can shape quality sandbars at higher tides. However, the beach is frequently blown out by the prevailing winds, making clean sessions the exception rather than the rule. Mid to high tide on an incoming push is the target - the banks organise best with water over them, and the stream influence at the south end only works with enough tidal push. When the swell gets overhead, vicious rip currents run along the beach - these are genuinely dangerous and should not be underestimated. The setting is wild and facilities are minimal: a basic campground backs the beach but otherwise there is nothing on this remote stretch. Crowds are moderate, peaking in summer when surfers looking to escape Raglan make the drive south.
