Fast hollow right peeling off a Bou Regreg groyne, a rare Rabat barrel when bigger NW swells hit low tide.
Doura is one of around eight breaks shaped by the angled groynes at the Bou Regreg rivermouth between Rabat and Salé. It is a fast, hollow right that runs along the sand off a jetty, capable of stringing together 200 to 500 metre rides when a solid W through N groundswell lines up with a low tide and a south-easterly offshore. Old-timers compare its form to a Moroccan Kirra, and although successive harbour development works have changed the bank, the wave can still throw genuine barrel sections in bigger surf. Consistency is the catch: it needs size and the right tide window, so it sits quiet most of the year. The water carries heavy pollution from the estuary, commercial port and residential runoff. The lineup gets busy fast with surfers from the Oudayas Surf Club across the Hassan II bridge. Brema, La Pointe and the Salé shorebreak nearby are noticeably weaker options when Doura is not working.
