Penthièvre occupies a long stretch of beachbreak between the village of Kerhillio to the north and the narrow isthmus that separates the Quiberon Peninsula from the mainland. The break sits on an uneven mix of reef and sand, producing a-frame peaks that are generally well-covered and forgiving — slopey, crumbly walls rather than hollow barrels, with a medium pace that suits progressive learners and longboarders. High tide is essential; at lower water the uneven bottom produces close-outs and the swell window tightens. SW to W swells are the go-to, with NE winds providing clean offshore conditions. The stretch doesn't handle significant size well — above about 1.8m the waves tend to crumble and section badly — but in the 0.5-1.5m range there are genuine rideable walls on offer. The area is well known locally as part of the broader Côte Sauvage zone, with Sainte Barbe to the north drawing longboarders and the sub-break known as Les Crevettes or Palissades favoured by beginners for its more sheltered, smaller surf. Tata Beach has a reputation as the social hub of this coastline. Access is straightforward from the main road along the isthmus, with a free car park and full camping and surf facilities nearby. Crowds reflect the spot's accessibility and reputation — expect a busy lineup on good summer days, particularly during school holidays when the campsite fills. Rip currents can run along the beach, so less experienced surfers should identify the channels before paddling out.
