Les Kaolins is a shallow reef break on the Brittany coast that produces short, punchy waves with a distinctly square shape and thick lip — the kind of wave that rewards commitment and punishes hesitation. The primary feature is a right-hander that peels off a shallow ledge with speed and power, producing genuine tube sections when conditions align. A left also runs off the peak but tends to section quickly, making the right the clear priority for most sessions. The wave fires on solid SW to W swells combined with a mid-to-high incoming tide; the window is narrow, and NE winds are essential to hold the face clean. Outside that window the spot rarely produces anything worthwhile, earning it a reputation as a specialist's break rather than a go-to destination. Wave lengths are short — typically under 50 metres — so each ride is concentrated and intense rather than drawn out. Boils rise through the reef unpredictably, adding an element of managed chaos to every take-off. The nearby offshore reef Le Couregan can deliver longer rides beginning from a wide bowl section, but only on low tide. Access is straightforward with a free car park on site. The lineup is regularly dominated by bodyboarders who know the break intimately, and localism is a real factor — observing the pecking order before paddling out is strongly advised. This is not a spot for intermediates or the unfamiliar.
