Gavres sits on a distinctive L-shaped peninsula in southern Brittany where the geography creates two contrasting surf zones on the same stretch of sand. The break is a sand-bottomed beach break producing a-frame peaks with slopey, medium-paced walls that are forgiving for intermediates rather than punishing. Wave faces are well-covered and tend toward the mellow end of the spectrum, with steep sections appearing on the better swells, though the break rarely gets hollow. The Linès side of the peninsula catches more swell exposure and will show waves when Grande Plage is flat, making it the go-to side on smaller swells. Grande Plage in contrast is well shielded from westerly winds, which can make it the cleaner option when conditions elsewhere in the region are blown out. The spot needs SW to W groundswell to function and picks up swell less readily than more exposed beaches nearby, so it works best when a solid pulse arrives. Offshore rocks sit outside the lineup and warrant a careful look before paddling out. Rip currents are present and should be assessed before entry. A free car park sits close to the beach, making access straightforward once you reach the peninsula. The lineup is rarely busy, drawing a local crowd of intermediates when waves appear rather than attracting the regional surf traffic that busier spots nearby receive.
