El Espino stretches along a 12km strip of sand in El Salvador's less-travelled Oriente Salvaje, where a rivermouth and mangrove estuary meet the Pacific. The wave is a classic peaky beachbreak with mellow, medium-paced A-frames over a sand bottom, dropping into 50-100m rides when the banks line up. Takeoffs are forgiving and the wave sections gently, which makes this a natural spot for beginners and early intermediates working on trim and cutbacks. On cleaner sandbanks and a pushing swell from SE through SW, the peaks steepen and can produce short tube sections for more confident surfers. The volcano of Chaparrastique looms inland, a reminder this is an active geological corner of the country, it last erupted in 2015. Access is easy by paved road from Usulutan to Balneario El Espino, with the break fronting the main beach and camping widely available. Crowds stay light thanks to the distance from La Libertad, with most traffic pushing east to Punta Mango and Las Flores. Rivermouth runoff brings occasional murky water and debris after heavy rain.
