Hitherhills is the sand-bottom beachbreak fronting the Hither Hills State Park campground on Montauk's south shore. The wave breaks as shifting left and right peaks with a mellow, well-covered face that occasionally jacks into a steeper takeoff before fattening across the inside. Power is on the slopey side, speed is medium to slow, and rides max out around the 50m mark. The break has the widest swell window on this stretch of Long Island, accepting anything from E around to SW, with a SE pulse on the incoming tide producing the cleanest banks. Winter groundswells churn the sandbars into closeouts, and the banks reform through spring and summer when the wave fires fun, knee-to-head-high peaks for the campground crowd. Access is straight off the State Park beach via the paid car park, with full campground amenities feeding the lineup all summer. Rip currents pull along the bars on bigger days.
