Surf spot guide · NYC Tri-State, United States
Submerged boulder reef west of Ditch Plains serving up walled-up Montauk rights on SE swells.
Fortress is a submerged boulder reef tucked along the Montauk shoreline a short distance west of Ditch Plains, breaking over a mix of boulders and sand that throws up walled-up sections with the occasional steeper takeoff. The wave is mostly a peak that favours the right on a south-east swell, running medium-paced with a slopey, well-covered shoulder and the odd boil giving away the rocks underneath. It works through every tide phase but tops out fast once the swell pushes past head-high, so it is best surfed in the 0.6 to 2m range with a clean north-westerly offshore. The setup is best known among Montauk regulars rather than visitors, and the local grommet crew tends to dominate the peak whenever it lights up. Access is straight off the beach in front of town, but the small permit-controlled car park fills early and roadside spots are restricted, pushing many surfers toward Ditch Plains, Atlantic Terrace or Poles instead.
