Supertubes.

Supertubes is the most intense section of the Ahipara left-hand point complex, positioned west of Mukies 2 on Northland's far north coast. The name is earned: the wave opens with a steep, critical drop into a deep, cylindrical barrel that demands total commitment from the first moment. Once through the initial pit, the wave transitions into a fast speed wall that carries surfers toward the Mukies sections further inside, offering a ride that can stretch 200 to 500 metres when conditions are aligned. The bottom is a mix of uneven reef and sand, with shallow rocks particularly prominent through the takeoff zone, adding real consequence to any mistimed entry. Low to mid tide on an outgoing push is the target - the drop from the shelf at lower water is what creates the deep barrel, and as the tide fills the wave loses its defining intensity. SW to W swells in the 2 to 2.4m range are ideal, and southerly winds hold the face clean. Rip currents are strong and must be read carefully before paddling out. The environment is strictly for advanced surfers: the combination of a heavy drop, shallow reef, and active rips creates a concentrated set of hazards that filter out all but the most experienced. Moderate crowds form on good days, though the demanding nature of the wave keeps numbers manageable compared to the more accessible Shipwreck Bay further inside.
