Mukies 1.

Mukies 1 is one of several left-hand point sections strung along the Ahipara complex on Northland's west coast, sitting between the longer, more exposed Peaks section to the east and Mukerau Beach (Mukies 2) further west. The wave is compact - rides run 50 to 100 metres - but what it lacks in length it compensates for with quality. The takeoff delivers a sucky barrel section that stands up sharply over the uneven reef and sand bottom, particularly at low tide when the shelf is most defined. The spot offers more natural shelter from westerly winds than the outer points, making it a viable option when cross-shore conditions shut down the more exposed sections of the lineup. Access requires either a long paddle from the beach or finding a gap in the rocks further up the point and using the constant drift that runs along the coast to carry you into position. SW to W swells in the 2 to 2.4m range are ideal, with southerly winds grooming the face. Outgoing low to mid tide is the target window. Crowds are moderate, with room to share when the more famous sections draw the majority of surfers. Rip currents are the primary hazard. An excellent option for intermediate to advanced surfers looking for a shorter, punchier ride within the broader Ahipara system.
