Surf spot guide Β· Northland, New Zealand
Variable left over sand and reef on the outer Ahipara point β works all tides and accommodates intermediates.
Dangerous Conditions
Dangerous conditions with waves up to 4.0m and energy levels reaching 3230 kJ. Peak conditions around 9:00 PM.
Extremely hazardous surf conditions. Only experienced surfers should consider entering the water. Strong currents, large waves, and powerful energy present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Mukies 2 is the westernmost named section of the Ahipara point complex, also known locally as Mukerau Beach. The wave breaks primarily over sand with scattered reef influence, which makes the shape more variable than the inner reef-dependent sections like Peaks and Mukies 1, but also means it functions across all tidal stages - a genuine advantage when timing is tight. On its day the left-hander produces hollow, fast sections that reward committed surfing, though sessions of soft, crumbly walls are equally common depending on how the sand has shifted. Rides run 100 to 200 metres, offering a good balance of length and wave quality for the Ahipara area. The spot catches SW to W swells reliably, making it one of the more dependable options in the complex, and southerly winds hold the face clean. The paddle out is easier than at the rockier inner sections, and the wave itself suits intermediate surfers more comfortably than the heavier Peaks or Mukies 1 further east. Rip currents and occasional submerged objects are the main hazards. Crowd levels are moderate: surfers who know the area tend to gravitate toward the more famous sections, leaving Mukies 2 as a quieter alternative when the point is firing.
Sand-bottomed left that works all tides across Ahipara's quieter western flank.
