Surf spot guide Β· Northland, New Zealand
World-class mellow left with 500m+ rides on the outer Ahipara complex β lower crowds thanks to the long walk.
Dangerous Conditions
Dangerous conditions with waves up to 4.0m and energy levels reaching 3274 kJ. Peak conditions around 9:00 PM.
Extremely hazardous surf conditions. Only experienced surfers should consider entering the water. Strong currents, large waves, and powerful energy present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Pines is the outermost named section of the Ahipara point complex, earning a world-class rating for the length and quality of its left-hand walls. The wave has a mellow shoulder with the odd cover-up section on smaller swells, making it more accessible than the heavier inner sections like Supertubes and Peaks. Rides can stretch well past 500 metres when conditions align - SW swell, southerly wind, and low incoming tide being the formula. The long walk required to reach Pines from the access points filters the crowd significantly, dropping pressure even when the rest of the Ahipara complex is busy. This makes it an ideal option for intermediates looking for space on a genuinely long wave without the intensity of the inner points. The wave handles 2 to 2.4m comfortably. Rip currents and submerged reef sections are the primary hazards. The low-tide-only window means timing is critical - arrive at the wrong stage and the walk is wasted.
Five-hundred-metre left walls, low tide only, crowd filtered by the walk.
