Shipwreck Bay.

Shipwreck Bay sits at the southern tip of Ninety Mile Beach near Ahipara, angled perfectly to funnel southwest swells into a sequence of long, peeling left-handers over sandbars. Locally called Shippies or Wreck Bay, it anchors a chain of lefthand points along this stretch of Northland coastline and is consistently rated one of New Zealand's finest waves - second only to Raglan in national reputation. The orientation allows it to pick up SW wrapping swell while the headland provides meaningful wind shelter from the southwest, keeping the surface cleaner than the exposed stretches further north. Rides routinely extend 200 to 500 metres, drawing performance surfers after open-face turns and beginners hunting their first long rides in the same session. Entry is straightforward from the beachside carpark and campsite at the bay's eastern end, making it the most accessible break in the Ahipara complex - a convenience that drives its crowd numbers. A persistent rip current runs through the lineup and should be factored into every paddle out; it reads as a channel but can push surfers well down the point. On its day the wave handles solid swell to 2.4m and retains shape across the tidal range. When the crowd is unworkable, the Peaks section further up the point and Mukerau Beach a couple of kilometres west offer legitimate alternatives with fewer eyes on them.
