Ngunguru Bar.

Ngunguru Bar is one of Northland's more elusive setups - a rivermouth sandbar break that only fires when conditions align just right. It needs a genuine SE swell to wrap into the bay, and those don't come around often this far north. When they do, the bar produces punchy, hollow lefts that can run 100 to 200 metres down the sand spit before closing out. The wave moves fast and stays shallow through the inside section, so positioning is critical. Access requires paddling across the rivermouth, which adds commitment - and a reminder to read the rip before you paddle out. The sand spit extending from the bar also throws up beach peaks worth checking on smaller days, giving the session more options when the bar isn't quite waking up. Low to mid incoming tide is the window, and a N wind keeps the face clean. Crowds are light - this spot requires too many things to go right at once to draw a consistent crew - but when it does connect, surfers in the know show up fast. Sharks are a known presence in the estuary zone.
