Waipu Bar.

Waipu Bar sits at the mouth of the Waipu River on Northland's east coast, where shifting sand deposits create a classic transient bank that rewards patience. The north side of the flow is where the action is at lower tides - a fast, hollow right peels off the bank with enough push to warrant a second look. As the tide fills in, the break redistributes across the broader beach stretch toward Waipu Cove, throwing up a-frame peaks that trade length for punch. The window is relatively wide - NE through SE swells all light it up, but a clean NE swell with a westerly wind is when Waipu Bar earns its reputation. Wave faces run between 2 and 2.4m before closing out; at the top end it gets consequential fast. Rip currents are an ever-present feature of any active rivermouth, so read the channels before paddling out. Sharks are present in the area - standard awareness applies. Camping is available nearby, making this a worthwhile overnight mission for those working the Northland coast. Not for beginners when the bar is active.
