Mangawhai Heads.

Mangawhai Heads is one of the most consistent surf breaks on New Zealand's east coast, a rivermouth setup where a natural spit of rocks combines with outflowing current to shape reliable, quality waves. The primary offering is a long left-hander that can run 200-500 metres in solid NE swells, with a hollow, fast wall that rewards committed, experienced surfers. A bonus right peels back toward the river mouth on the same swell, and smaller conditions also produce rideable waves on the north side of the rocks. The break fires best at lower tides - falling tide through low being the sweet spot - when the sand banks are exposed and the outgoing river flow sharpens the shape. NE swells in the 0.3-3.7m range are ideal, with westerly winds providing the clean offshore conditions that transform this spot. Its consistency relative to the rest of the east coast means it draws crowds whenever conditions align, and a degree of localism can surface on the better days. Competent intermediate to advanced surfers are best suited here - rips run along the spit and sharks have been sighted in the area. The combination of power, length and accessibility makes Mangawhai Heads a benchmark wave for the Auckland and Northland region.
