Surf spot guide Β· Auckland & Coromandel, New Zealand
Reliable beachbreak with a sweet left point in NE swells plus peaks stretching into the distance down Pakiri Beach.
Forestry has something for everyone on the east Northland coast. The main draw is a reliable beachbreak that works across all tidal stages, producing A-frame peaks on any NE to E swell that pushes through. A sweet left point materialises on bigger NE swells at the northern end of the beach near Te Arai Point, drawing crowds on weekends. On the north side of the point, a right peels in E or SE swell that squeaks through the Barrier Islands - a less obvious option that rewards those who check around the corner. Further south, Pakiri Beach extends peaks into the distance with plenty of room to spread out. The wave handles 1 to 2.4m before starting to close out, at which point nearby Goat Island offers gnarly rights for the experienced. SW winds are offshore and essential for clean conditions. Crowds are a constant on weekends, with localism flagged on the main peaks. Rips and sharks are the primary hazards.
