Surf spot guide Β· Northland, New Zealand
Remote farm-access sand beach with multiple E-swell peaks β fun for all levels, walk south for solitude.
Mimiwhangata Bay - also known as Okupe Beach - sits inside a protected coastal farm reserve in Northland, requiring payment to cross private land to reach the break. That minor toll keeps the lineup honest: you won't find a resort crowd here, just whoever made the effort. When an east swell lines up, multiple peaks materialise across the beach and deliver punchy, well-organised surf that rewards everyone from beginners finding their feet to experienced surfers hunting the steeper, hollower sections. The SE window is the sweet spot - swell arrives with enough angle to give the banks shape without closing out. NW winds come in offshore and groom the face cleanly. Tides here are forgiving across the full range, though incoming and high tend to keep the banks fuller and the wave a touch more forgiving on the inside. Wave faces in the 0.3-1.8m range are the bread and butter; bigger swells push toward 2.4m but the banks can struggle with organisation at size. Walk south along the beach toward Paraparea Point and the crowd - never thick to begin with - disappears entirely. Consistent, accessible, and genuinely fun: a rare combination in this part of Northland.
Multiple peaks materialise across the bay when the SE window opens, rewarding the effort.
