Whananaki North.

Whananaki North - known locally as The Bar - is a rare bird that only truly comes to life when a SE swell pushes into the Northland coast. When it does, long peeling lefts unwind across low to mid tide rivermouth sandbars, producing whackable sections that stretch 200 to 500 metres before the wave runs out of energy. The quality is excellent on its best days, but the window is narrow: the wave closes out above 1.8m, the SE swell angle is uncommon this far north, and the bar shape depends on river flow. This rarity is precisely what drives the crowd dynamic - when it's on, every surfer in the district mobilises despite the remote location. Localism is flagged, so approach with awareness. Low to mid tide on an incoming push is the target, and NW winds groom the face. The rivermouth is very rippy on an outgoing tide - respect the channels and don't fight the current. When the bar isn't cooperating, empty Whananaki South has serviceable beachbreaks on its day. Sharks are present in these waters.
