Located a short drive from Lakey Peak in Sumbawa, the wave is long and fast, peeling over reef and offering excellent rides on clean, glassy days. It is best on a mid to high tide with a solid southwest swell, producing long rides and heavy tubes. Compared to nearby breaks like Lakey Peak and Pipe, Periscopes is more forgiving, making it a good choice for intermediate surfers seeking a fast-paced wave. Crowds can gather during the dry season, but early mornings often offer quieter sessions. Hazards include shallow reef, strong currents, and the occasional urchin, so it remains unsuitable for beginners. Access is via a short walk from the nearby village or by boat from Lakey Peak. The spot is favored by advanced and expert surfers seeking powerful, technical waves.

Wear booties
Getting here is a 40 minute walk up the beach from Lakey, about a mile, but the paddle out at the end of it is only 100 metres.

Respect locals
Surf it early. The dry-season trades blow it out later in the morning, so dawn is the clean window.

Time the session for a high tide, which is when the wave starts kicking and when there is enough water over the reef.

It needs a bigger and more southerly swell than Lakey Peak, so it can be flat here on a day the Peak is working.

HAZARDS · KNOW BEFORE YOU PADDLE

The reef is shallow and sucks dry on the sets, so the wave needs plenty of water over it to make it out of the barrel onto the shoulder.
Low tide leaves the inside shallow and ledgy over sharp coral and rock, and is a poor choice at any level.
It only switches on with a big swell that has plenty of south in it, and it holds to about eight foot before it stops being makeable.
This is a natural-footers tube-riding wave and it draws a crowd whenever it breaks, so expect a contested take-off zone.
