Surf spot guide · Rote, Indonesia
Boa is a powerful, fast, and hollow right-hand reef break on Rote Island known for challenging barrels.
Boa is an intermediate right-hand reef break located about 8 kilometers south of Nemberala on Rote Island, offering fast, hollow waves that range from shoulder-high to double-overhead. The wave coils through challenging walls over several hundred metres, providing thrilling tube rides for experienced surfers. It works best with a solid south to southwest swell and is surfable across all tides, though mid to high tides are generally more manageable, balancing the shallow lows and fuller highs. Optimal conditions occur during light winds, particularly in the early mornings and late afternoons, or off-season northerlies. Access requires a 15-minute walk from the nearest parking area, and the spot is known for its tranquil setting and crystal-clear waters. Surfers should exercise caution due to the shallow reef and the presence of sea urchins, especially at lower tides.
