Préfailles.

The coastline around Préfailles and Pointe St-Gildas conceals a cluster of reef breaks that reward patient exploration. The waves break over uneven reef, producing steep, fast-moving peaks with a bowly quality that walls up cleanly on the right push of tide. Boils and shallow sections add an unpredictable element to the ride, and the wrapping swell shape means faces can shift quickly. The spot works on a broad swell window from SW through to NW, with a W swell the optimal angle, and needs a northerly wind to clean up. Critically, these breaks are tidal creatures - they function mainly around mid-tide on the push, and missing that window means either exposed reef or walled-out closeouts. The surrounding area sits roughly an hour from Nantes, tucking into a stretch of coast with genuine N wind protection that keeps conditions cleaner than nearby exposed beaches when the wind is up. Entry requires reading the reef carefully from shore first; the irregular bottom means lines change with the swell and water level. Currents run hard here and should not be underestimated, particularly as the tide moves. The adjacent reef of La Couronnée, lying between Préfailles and Noirmoutier, is only reachable by boat. Crowds arrive at a moderate level when conditions align, typical of a spot that is known but not overrun.
