La Govelle is a reef-and-sand break sitting on the Atlantic-facing edge of the Presqu'île de Guérande, shaped by an uneven mix of rock and sand that produces two distinct peak zones. The rights are the standout, tending to line up more consistently and gaining shape and speed as swell size builds into the 1-2m-plus range. Both directions are fast and punchy with a steep takeoff owing to the shallow reef sections below - boils telegraph the shallower patches and demand attentive positioning. The wave runs 50-100m when it connects properly. SW swell is the primary driver, with the window opening usefully into NW, and a NE wind cleans things up best. All tides are surfable, with the incoming tide noted as optimal and low tide exposing mussel-covered rocks that narrow usable zones considerably. La Govelle is one of the few quality reef options along this stretch of the Loire-Atlantique coast, which explains why it draws heavy traffic from La Baule and the surrounding resort towns year-round. Crowds are a persistent reality rather than a weekend inconvenience - arriving at first light is the most reliable way to find workable space in the lineup. A surf school operates at the site, adding learners to the mix on smaller days. Car parking is available nearby and showers are on site.
