L'Ermitage.

L'Ermitage is a broad, open beachbreak sitting just south of the Loire estuary on the Atlantic coast of Loire-Atlantique. Sand bottom peaks produce crumbly, slopey waves with a well-covered feel - nothing hollow or ledging here. Waves are medium-paced with some welling-up sections and occasional steeper faces, but the overall character is forgiving and accessible. The spot works across all tides, with incoming tide generally producing the cleanest shape. The 0-50m wave length reflects the broken, shifting nature of sandbar peaks rather than any defined wall. Optimal conditions arrive on solid W swells with SW-NW window, though the beachbreak nature means consistency is moderate and surf can disappear entirely in small, glassy conditions. Stormrider identifies this break as the better option within the St-Brevin stretch, preferred over the nearby Les Rochelets to the north. Access is straightforward via the beachfront carpark; entry is a simple beach walk-in with no rock hazards. The wide, flat sands also attract kitesurfers when cross-onshore winds dominate, which is frequent on this exposed stretch of coast. Cross-onshore conditions ruin surfing here but are unavoidable during much of the year. Crowd pressure is light, consistent with a regional beach that lacks the profile of more well-known Atlantic spots. The main practical concern is water quality - the estuary influence can push compromised water south, particularly after rain.
