Le Gouffre is a well-known reef break located at Etang-Salé, popular for its punchy and fast waves. Le Gouffre got its name from the volcanic basalt fissure/blowhole feature. The spot works best with a solid south or southwest swell and is most consistent during the southern hemisphere winter months. Due to the presence of a sharp reef and strong currents, it is recommended for experienced surfers only. Shark presence is a known hazard in the area, so local precautions are in place. Access is relatively straightforward via a short walk from the parking area. The spot can get crowded on good days, especially on weekends.
