Praia do Sossego is a 150 meter pocket of golden sand between Piratininga and Camboinhas in Niterói's Região Oceânica, hemmed in by forested rock headlands and reached only by a steep trail or by sea. Most days it earns its name: the flanking costões shelter the cove, the water stays small or flat, and the city treats it as a nature refuge with a Blue Flag rating and a municipal visitor cap, not as a surf beach. The exception is rare and violent. When a ressaca on the Rio coast reaches peak size and force, sets explode on the headlands and rebound head on into the next incoming wave, the mutant wave that surf media documented in September 2021 under 70 km/h southwest wind, two days after the same swell produced 4 meter bombs at Itacoatiara. There is no fixed peak and no clean peel, only a shifting collision wedge ridden almost entirely by bodyboarders. With no lifeguard and slow access, it is an experts-only spectacle that shows a handful of days a year.

Reached via the Trilha e Mirante Juliana Marins trail from Estrada Francisco da Cruz Nunes or Rua Desembargador Nicolau Mary Júnior in Camboinhas; paved but steep, then a rocky descent, with no trailhead parking. Also reachable by sea, which the city tourism office recommends.
