Surf spot guide · Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
A storied right off Pedra de Itapuca that peels into Guanabara Bay for up to 500 m when a big south swell finally bends in.
Itapuca is the right that breaks around Pedra de Itapuca, the rock landmark between Praia de Icaraí and Praia das Flechas on the Niterói shore of Guanabara Bay. Most of the year it sleeps. When a big south to southeast swell drives deep into the bay, usually from May onward, the machine switches on and a wall peels along the rocks toward Icaraí, with rides claimed at up to 500 m on the best days: locals call it the Brazilian Jeffreys Bay. This is the cradle of Niterói surfing, ridden since the 1940s, and the city-backed Itapuca Legend contest born in 1999 still waits on it every winter. The lineup splits into named peaks, from the flat-rock Tapete inside where beginners learn to outer peaks running close to exposed boulders like the Peixe Porco, so study the rocks before committing and skip low tide. Entry is a short walk off the Icaraí promenade. The whole community paddles out when it breaks, and the water is the catch: INEA rated Icaraí proper for bathing only 59% of 2025.
A wave that sleeps for months, then peels 500 metres past the rock when the bay lets a south swell in.
