The sheltered fort corner at Posto 6: flat most days, long point rights when a big south swell shuts the open beaches, and a heavy bodyboard ledge off the fort.
Forte de Copacabana is the sheltered southern corner of Copacabana beach at Posto 6, directly in front of the Fairmont hotel, where the fort's headland blocks the southwest wind and strips the power out of big swells. Most days the corner sits flat, left to swimmers and stand-up paddlers, but when a solid pulse from the south, southeast or east gets in, long, mellow rights peel off the point at 0.5 to 1.0 m, best with the tide drained right out. That shelter makes it the city's defensive call: when a big swell maxes out Barra and the open beaches, the corner keeps a friendly, makeable right that beginners and intermediates can enjoy while everything else closes out. Off the fort's seaward face lies the Laje do Shore, a barely submerged rock shelf that turns the same swell into a hollow, punishing shorebreak. Bodyboarders treat it as a rite of passage: the ledge is crusted with shellfish, earned the nickname Expresso EscorpiΓ£o, and most regulars carry a scar from it. Getting in is a simple walk down the public sand at Posto 6, and midweek the laje is often ridden by only a handful. When the corner is flat, Diabo and Arpoador around the point pick up far more swell.
The fort keeps this corner asleep until a south swell wakes long rights and the shellfish-crusted ledge they call Expresso EscorpiΓ£o.

Flat-day crowds are swimmers and SUP paddlers, not surfers. When the laje breaks it draws a small bodyboard crew, with almost nobody out midweek.
Urban, sheltered, occasionally heavy

Copacabana's most exposed beachbreak, a busy sand-bottom a-frame that turns hollow and fast on solid E to S swell.

Arpoador offers consistent waves between Copacabana and Ipanema, ideal for beginners and intermediates.
+9 MORE βWait for a solid S to E swell with SW wind, most days the corner is flat and only SUP paddlers are out.
When a big south swell closes out Barra and the open beaches, this corner is the defensive call, it stays clean and makeable while the exposed spots max out.
Time it for low tide, the corner rights and the laje both work best with the tide drained out.
Treat the Laje do Shore as a bodyboard wave unless you know it well, the shelf is shallow and crusted with shellfish.
Expect a strong rip pulling you off the peak once the shorebreak has size.
If the corner is flat, Diabo and Arpoador around the point catch far more swell.
