Praia Grande.

Praia Grande is Arraial do Cabo's surf beach, a long stretch of open Atlantic sand at the start of the 40 kilometre Massambaba restinga running west toward Saquarema. It throws a-frame peaks splitting into lefts and rights, the best shape gathering in the left corner where a south to southeast swell wraps into a channel. On a clean, moderate day the waves run short and punchy; once real size arrives they turn hollow and fast, a step up from the gentle beginner days most visitors picture. The beach sits right against the town boardwalk, so paddling out is a short walk from kiosks, bars and parking, no boat or hike required. What sets it apart is the water: a seasonal ressurgencia pulls cold, nutrient rich water up from depth, often dropping the sea into the mid teens Celsius even in summer, so a long wetsuit is standard kit, not an option. Weekdays stay manageable, but weekends and any working swell pull a crowd, and small clean days share the shallows with local fishing boats.

On a solid south swell the left corner unloads long, hollow walls over sand so cold it aches.
