Avalanche is a heavy outer-reef surf spot on Oahu’s North Shore that only breaks properly on large winter swells. It forms powerful left walls far offshore, with long driving sections and an occasional end-section barrel when conditions align. This is an expert-only wave due to size, unpredictable takeoff shifts, and the sheer force of water moving across the reef. Most surfers only attempt it when fully prepared, often with support teams or ski assistance on the biggest days. Paddle access is possible from Haleiwa on smaller swells, but the distance and currents make it a serious commitment. It rarely feels crowded because conditions naturally filter out everyone except surfers who are capable of handling it. Winter is prime season, with waves commonly ranging from 4.5 m to 9+ m.
